13th Annual Webby Awards: more .mobi than ever.

June 21, 2009

13th Annual Webby Awards: more .mobi than ever.

Webby Awards Logo This week, the winners of the 13th annual Webby Awards were announced. In the mobile division , there were several .mobi winners:

The Best Use of GPS or Location Technology award went to Adidas Marathon Run Tracker at http://marathon.marvellous.mobi. The Mobile Entertainment award went to Discovery Mobile at http://discovery.mlogic.mobi. The Mobile Sports award winner and People’s Voice award winner went to ESPN Mobile at http://espn.mobi.
Also nominated for Integrated Mobile Experience was Virgin Atlantic’s Love from Above campaign (now retired but formerly at lovefromabove.mobi) and for Listings & Updates was previous award winner ZAGAT.mobi (which you can easily find at http://zagat.mobi).
Several other .mobi sites were named as honorees, including:

An application we’ve previously mentioned from mobiSiteGalore.mobi, which allows mobile users to build a mobile-ready site directly from their phones, was also cited as one of the Webby Awards’ honorees.
In all, this represents a very strong showing from .mobi users as well as representing a broad swath of uses of the .mobi domain — and is definitely a big step forward from the minimal number of mobile categories (and sites) that we saw only three years ago.

What does Joe Bloggs Think of Domainers?

May 5, 2009

Howard Nieu from Traffic had a little walk about about before the last conference & asked the average man and woman on the street if they knew what a domain was and if they had heard of domainers.

The general response was that they had no opinion really of domainers. I think this industry is still largely unknown and a secret really, as most of us know. And the blank looks we get from freinds and family. Although they all know what a domain is now, right?

It was a lighthearted bit of interviewing by Howard and some fairly easy questions, but quite fun all the same. Gave some food for thought. I would be interested to run some questions with the public here in the UK myself. More on that another time.

The Queen’s a reverse Hijacker!

April 12, 2009

I just got reminded of this case through the fact that ‘QueenElizabeth.com’ is about to drop into snapnames hands . Basically the advisors to the Queen of England rather arrogantly suggested that she must have the rights to ‘NewZealand.com’. It was around the time every Tom, Dick and Harry was tring it on for generics, a bit like now, but Geo’s were more the subject for reverse hijacking attempts then.

The beauty of this aesop’s fable is that Liz got branded a reverse hijacker.

To quote the WIPO panelists : “The allegation of reverse domain name hijacking succeeds”

They even went as far to say: “In the circumstances, the Panel has no hesitation in branding this misconceived Complaint as an abuse of the Policy, which has put the Respondent to needless expense.”

Which was particularly amusing. Hey, who said WIPO never get it right and have no sense of humour?? LOL

Here are the panelists:

Presiding Panelist

Gordon Harris

Panelist
Milton Mueller

Hmm,Mueller sounds German to me, wonder if he wrote the report?!

Hey, I can say that it’s my blog! The Queen’s more German than English anyway, but that’s another story. I’m a Brit myself so not biased! Not much.

Okay, enough rambling here’s the official WIPO report:

Hey Google! G.mobi is FREE …… if you’re quick!

March 27, 2009

Further to our article recently Here about dotmobi making available 1 and 2 character .mobi mobile domain names. We thought we would write about why (apparently) Google  hasn’t applied for G.mobi

Maybe they have, and apologies to Google & mtld if they are currently negotiating, but even if they are, it would need to be a stand alone site imho. I also doubt they know, or are in process because of how they have dragged their heels over their current google.mobi site which they have had since 2006

Now, short is sweet, particularly on mobile. It’s probably one of the reasons Google paid (allegedly) millions for G.cn (.cn is the country code for China). We will try and find the exact figure for you and report back.

Now, Google are also sponsors and backers of .mobi

For any rfp applicant to .mobi for a one or two character .mobi, there is no charge. You just apply in the first instance here

Then i believe there is a nominal $500 fee, that’s really to just sort the wheat from the chaff so that every man and his dog doesn’t apply without due diligence and so that they have a genuine case.

1 and 2 character dot mobi’s go LIVE

March 24, 2009

dotMobi, the company behind .mobi—the only Internet address created specifically for locating content that works on all mobile phones—today announced the allocation of the first two-character mobile Internet domain to Fifth Third Bank: 53.mobi

Promotion on 53.com pc site:  53.com/external/mobile

In January of this year, dotMobi announced that it is making available .mobi domain names with one and two alphanumeric characters, such as q.mobi, k9.mobi, 13.mobi or ny.mobi. These short names are highly sought after by companies who want to extend their brand with brief, memorable Web addresses. Fifth Third Bank is among the very first innovative banking brands to do so, extending services available on their existing Web site, 53.com, to the mobile phone.

Fifth Third Bank launched its mobile banking service in select markets beginning in February and continues to roll out the service throughout its 12-state footprint during the month of March. With Fifth Third Mobile Banking, customers can use their mobile phones to view information such as account balances and pending & posted transactions, to transfer funds, and to find Fifth Third ATMs and branch locations. Those who enroll also can sign up to receive text alerts regarding balance levels, statement availability and more. With 53.mobi, Fifth Third Bank joins other leading financial institutions in providing their customers with mobile sites to handle their “on the go” banking needs.

Toys.com sells for $5.1 million - BBC Report

March 4, 2009

It is common knowledge amongst the domainer community that Toys.com just sold for over $5 million to Toys R Us.

What was rather nice was this article I found by the BBC, always nice when the mainstream media report stories like this. When even overpriced  art and rare red diamonds are failing to sell to the uber rich in public auctions, great to see the top end domain market still fairing extremely well in almost unprecedented financial times.

Also congrats to Ron Jackson of DNJournal.com for getting quoted and being prominently mentioned. It’s only right Ron should be consulted as he has done so much for the industry and is our one true ‘reporter’. Everyone else is a bloggist, lol. I’ll pass on sedo. Nora is a very nice lady though!
