Hey Google! G.mobi is FREE …… if you’re quick!

March 27, 2009

Further to our article recently Here about dotmobi making available 1 and 2 character .mobi mobile domain names. We thought we would write about why (apparently) Google  hasn’t applied for G.mobi

Maybe they have, and apologies to Google & mtld if they are currently negotiating, but even if they are, it would need to be a stand alone site imho. I also doubt they know, or are in process because of how they have dragged their heels over their current google.mobi site which they have had since 2006

Now, short is sweet, particularly on mobile. It’s probably one of the reasons Google paid (allegedly) millions for G.cn (.cn is the country code for China). We will try and find the exact figure for you and report back.

Now, Google are also sponsors and backers of .mobi

For any rfp applicant to .mobi for a one or two character .mobi, there is no charge. You just apply in the first instance here

Then i believe there is a nominal $500 fee, that’s really to just sort the wheat from the chaff so that every man and his dog doesn’t apply without due diligence and so that they have a genuine case.

I think it’s fair to say there is no-one bigger in the internet world than google, so I would be amazed if they didn’t seize this opportunity with open arms. It is free after all. The only thing I can think is they are being lazy for want of a better word with regards to mobile. Their message is unclear, they redirect their google.mobi site. Sure it redirects to a mobile verison on a mobile and gives instructions on a pc. But why not a stand alone site? It would make perfect sense. It’s all about branding and giving relevant results. It’s why google use the cctld versions of their sites, after all.

There does seem to be work underway at m.google.mobi , as we mentioned in a previous article. I did contact Google’s press office in the UK, but they didn’t seem too technically minded and whilst they got back quick, the response was short, grey, and didn’t answer a thing. They really sounded like they had no strong vision. I will keep contacting various departments to see if we can get the right people. I mean, there is obviously work underway on this domain, it’s why it’s tucked away on the m.

Another thing to consider is what if a competitor or even someone unrelated steps in and takes the domain G.mobi via rfp because Google were caught napping? They wouldn’t have another chance. What better present for their mobile visitors than a one character keystroke url?

As previously discussed also, phone handset manufacturers, like nokia & samsung, who are .mobi backers and sponsors are gearing their phones for the mobile internet and .mobi

In this article we discussed about how samsung had released their latest phone with a quick button to select domain extensions, including .com, .org, .mobi

See screenshot below. .mobi with centre billing.

Now, to me it’s clear this will be a feature of all samsung phones and nokia, the biggest phone supporter of .mobi will follow suit. This all aids further the beauty of a really short domain, I mean can you imagine owning G.mobi ???

My first name is Guy,………. maybe I’ll apply , I’ll trademark it first and get that way! LOL

Jokes aside, I wonder if google realise Yahoo have actually trademarked Y.com ? To make sure they get it. Of course Y.com, G.com etc. are all held by Icann, and may be auctioned off by them.

Hey, this message goes out to Yahoo too. After all Yahoo are alexa ranked the 2nd most popular site in the world.

I could wheel on a 1o year old marketing student and ask them what’s better to brand for mobile all round? m.google.com , m.yahoo.com, or Y.mobi or G.mobi?

Do I need to do that. Look at the alexa ranks and popularity of yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.com, google.de etc ……….

Now tell me that Y.mobi or G.mobi couldn’t be the most popular sites in the world? Of course they could, as they are not country centric. They / .mobi (mobile) is world centric, along with the billions of users, accessed by pc AND mobile.

They will no doubt pay millions for them, one day, whenever that may be. Yet this peach is just sitting here waiting to be plucked from the tree. For FREE!

As a side note there are a few single letter .com’s in existence, one is X.com owned by paypal. Also Z.com is owned by Nissan.

Why don’t you send this link to Google? They may be blissfully unaware.

Then post back here in the comments section, what you sent and where, then it can be proof in the future that they were told! I really hope they see this and act on it as it would be a joy to be out on the mobile and visit  G.mobi

It looks amazing , and is obvious what it is, Google Mobile! There is only one ‘Big G‘ after all!

DIGG IT!
